The team at Armchair Revolutionary came to 2 Out of Three because of our experience working in both video game and web design. The challenge they were looking to solve was incorporating a gaming user interface into a social networking web site. Their aim is to encourage users to support valuable social projects and then keep them engaged with an underlying gaming model that rewards active users with points and virtual currencies.
After creating a handful of gaming concepts for ArmRev we settled on a “building block” based metaphor for the design. Rewards would be handed out as blocks of points which users would collect by completing tasks associated to a particular social project. The “building blocks” lended themselves to quick, but satisfying animations which increased the desire for each user to continue doing more tasks. Because we were incorporating a video game aesthetic into a web world, limited by browsers and bandwidth, we walked a thin line. The designs and animations had to build the desire for progression within the game but could not be as complex or elaborate as those seen in console based video games.
Once we completed the designs for ArmRev we brought Kenny, our VP of Engineering, on to the project and got down to the nitty gritty. With a base of Ruby on Rails code and a garnish of Flash animations the ArmRev site came alive in April 2010 amidst a flurry of great press.
